THE PROJECT

One of the earliest Power2Africa projects was the development of a solar-powered internet café in Kenya. Working as part of a larger project which saw the instalment of a solar powered and biogas mini-grid, this project helped to revolutionise the local communities.

About the Solar Powered Internet Café

This project highlights all the key values of P2A, helping to provide an off-grid community with a source of electricity and access to the internet. In turn, this provides the locals with access to educational, entertainment and commercial assets that they previously wouldn’t have had available to them.

We worked with a local company, Ubuntu Power, who provided the infrastructure that made this project possible. Power2Africa provided the power, space, internet, community engagement and project management required to make the cyber café go from plans to reality.

Additional Benefits of this Project

As well as the solar panels providing power that can be used for essentials such as lighting, operating appliances and charging phones it also powered the community WIFI. Due to the huge growth in smartphones over recent years this facility offers a hub for locals to connect to the internet, charge their phones and interact with each other.

This project has been developed next to a local school, who will be able to use the café as an extension to the classroom providing them with a wealth of educational material to enhance their learning and provide them with easier access to further education.

Super chuffed to have seen this project go from theory to reality. This will help to transform the lives of everyone living in the community.
